What is core spun yarn and what are its advantages

August 29,2023

Core spun yarn, also known as composite yarn or wrapped yarn, is a new type of yarn composed of two or more fibers. The initial core-spun yarn was developed using cotton fiber as the skin and polyester short fiber yarn as the core for short fiber and short fiber core-spun yarn. Due to its own material, the cored wire is prone to pilling, and the degree of pilling varies depending on the amount of friction.

Core spun yarn is generally made by twisting synthetic fiber filaments with good strength and elasticity as the core, and wrapping them with short fibers such as cotton, wool, and viscose fibers. The core-spun yarn has the excellent performance of both filament core-spun yarn and wrapped short fibers. A common core spun yarn is polyester cotton core spun yarn, which uses polyester filament as the core yarn and is wrapped with cotton fibers. There is also spandex core-spun yarn, which is made of spandex filament as the core yarn and wrapped with other fibers. Knitted fabrics or jeans made of this core-spun yarn can stretch and fit comfortably when worn. Its main purpose is to enhance cotton canvas and maintain the water repellency of cotton fibers that expand when exposed to water, utilizing polyester to have tensile elongation, tear resistance, and shrinkage resistance when exposed to moisture in the rain.

At present, core-spun yarn has developed into many types, which can be summarized into three categories: short fiber and short fiber core-spun yarn, chemical fiber filament and short fiber core-spun yarn, chemical fiber filament and chemical fiber filament core-spun yarn. At present, the commonly used core-spun yarn is generally a unique structure formed by using synthetic filament as the core yarn and wrapping various short fibers. The commonly used chemical fiber filaments for its core yarn include  polyester filament, nylon filament, spandex filament, etc. Outsourced short fibers include cotton, polyester, polyester,  nylon , acrylic, and wool fibers.

Advantages of core spun yarn

In addition to having a special structure, core-spun yarn also has many advantages. It can utilize the excellent physical properties of core-spun synthetic filament and the performance and surface characteristics of wrapped short fibers to fully utilize the strengths of both fibers and make up for their shortcomings. For example, polyester cotton core spun yarn can fully utilize the advantages of polyester filament being cool, anti crease, easy to wash and dry, while also leveraging the advantages of wrapped cotton fibers such as good moisture absorption, low static electricity, and low pilling and pilling. The woven fabric is easy to dye and organize, comfortable to wear, easy to wash, and has a bright color, beautiful and generous appearance.

Core spun yarn can also reduce the weight of the fabric while maintaining and improving its performance. By utilizing the different chemical properties of synthetic filament and outer spun fibers, during the dyeing and finishing process of the fabric, some of the outer spun fibers are rotted off with chemicals, resulting in a three-dimensional pattern effect of rotted fabric.

The use of core-spun yarn

At present, the core-spun yarn with cotton as the skin and polyester as the core is the most widely used, which can be used to produce student clothing, work clothes, shirts, bathrobe fabrics, skirt fabrics, sheets, and decorative fabrics. In recent years, an important development of core-spun yarn has been the use of polyester core-spun yarn covered with viscose, viscose and linen, or cotton and viscose blended yarn, as well as core-spun yarn covered with cotton and silk or cotton and wool blended yarn in women's clothing fabrics. These products are very popular among people.

Varieties of core spun yarn

According to the different uses of core-spun yarn, the main varieties of core-spun yarn currently include: core-spun yarn for clothing fabrics, core-spun yarn for elastic fabrics, core-spun yarn for decorative fabrics, and core-spun yarn for sewing threads. There are also various spinning methods for core spun yarn, including ring spinning, electrospinning, vortex spinning, self twisting spinning, etc. At present, China's cotton textile industry mostly uses cotton ring spinning to spin core spun yarn.

Will the core-spun yarn pilling

The fabric of core-spun yarn will pilling. Because core-spun yarn is directly formed on a spinning machine and does not reveal the inner core, it is usually made by using synthetic fiber filaments with good strength and elasticity as the core of the core-spun yarn, while the outer side is spun by twisting similar short fibers such as cotton, wool, or viscose fibers together. Due to its own material, the cored wire is prone to pilling, and the degree of pilling varies depending on the amount of friction.
